Pure and Abrasive Waterjet

Waterjet is one of the most revolutionary cutting tools, which uses a high-pressure water. The waterjet cutting method is categorized into two: the pure and the abrasive. Pure Waterjet

Pure waterjet uses only ultra-high pressure clean stream of water to cut through things, but of softer materials such as foam, rubber, paper, carpet, plastic, gasket, and so on. Pure waterjet cutting process involves filtered tap water going through an intensifier pump, which is then pressurized to 60,000 psi. This pressurized water goes through an orifice jewel, usually sapphire, which is about 0.15mm. This results in a very fine stream of water that travels at a speed of 900 m per second. The outcome is a highly accurate waterjet cut.

 

Abrasive Waterjet

Abrasive waterjet, also called as abrasivejet, uses same high-pressure water stream, but with an abrasive to speed up the cutting process, and is usually applied on harder materials like stone, glass, wood, ceramic, metal, and more. The abrasive added in the waterjet process is usually garnet. The grit size of the abrasive is typically 80 mesh, but it can vary from 50 to 220 mesh. You’ll find very versatile machines on the market, where you can use both pure and abrasive waterjet.

Abrasive waterjet is used for cutting harder materials such as stone, metal or stainless steel, aluminium, ceramics, and more. The process of cutting using abrasive waterjet is the same with pure waterjet cutting. The only difference is that from the orifice, the stream of water enters a carbide nozzle. As the water passes through, a mixing chamber inside the nozzle creates a sort of a vacuum, wherein garnet is introduced. The vacuum drags the garnet into the stream of water, creating an extremely powerful cutting tool.

Abrasive waterjet can cut through titanium with a thickness of half-inch at a speed of seven inches per minute, using 30 HP pump. Other applications of abrasive waterjets include cutting bullet-proof glass, aircraft and spacecraft parts, and logs in sawmills. It can also remove materials inside tunnels and marking strips of highways. Abrasive waterjets are also useful in carving wood and creating sculpture. This technology has been used by many different industries, including construction, manufacturing, designing, and many others.
